Source and method

Values come from Production_Crops_Livestock_E_All_Data.csv in FAO’s bulk archive, column Y2024. Cattle use item 867 and element 5320; chickens use item 1058 and element 5321. Cattle are recorded in An (individual animals); chickens in 1000 An (thousand animals), multiplied by 1,000 for display.

An official dataset can contain estimated values

A means official figure; E means estimated value; I means imputed by a receiving agency. Inclusion in FAOSTAT does not turn an estimate into a direct count. Gulf coverage here means the six GCC members, not every country bordering the Gulf.

This is a one-year snapshot, not a live feed. The source archive was last modified on 31 December 2025 and checked on 18 October 2026. Readers can inspect the original archive and reproduce the extraction. FAO bulk archive.

What counts cannot establish

These are not totals for all animals: sheep, goats, camels, buffalo and fish are excluded. They do not measure imports, residents’ consumption, the share of industrial farms or its growth. Counts alone cannot establish stocking density, suffering or compliance with slaughter requirements.

Establishing growth in factory farming requires a time series and a stable definition, such as establishment size, housing system and production share. We therefore do not label a slaughter chart as factory-farming growth; connecting evidence to a ruling remains a juristic question.
