Three steps that should not be collapsed
- What does the text say or the research measure?
- What facts are established about this product or farm?
- How does a jurist connect the principle to those facts? This is where much disagreement lies.
Shared ethics do not erase different methods
The Qur’an is shared, but hadith authentication and legal derivation differ across Sunni and Ja‘fari methods. Sunni authentication does not automatically establish a report in another method, and environmental research does not issue a religious ruling.

Animals are communities
Qur’an 6:38 · الأنعام ٣٨
- What it supports
- Land animals and birds are described as communities like us, challenging treatment of animals as objects.
- Evidence boundary
- This does not by itself prohibit meat; other verses permit animal foods.
- Source and method
- Shared primary scripture; compare translations and tafsir.
Lawful and good food
Qur’an 2:168 · البقرة ١٦٨
- What it supports
- Halal and tayyib occur together: lawfulness and goodness deserve attention beyond a label.
- Evidence boundary
- Tayyib is interpreted differently; it is not automatically a welfare certificate or a synonym for vegan.
- Source and method
- Read alongside lawful-food verses and commentary.
Do not cooperate in wrongdoing
Qur’an 5:2 · المائدة ٢
- What it supports
- Cooperation in sin and aggression is forbidden; buying practices can therefore raise responsibility questions.
- Evidence boundary
- Buyer liability requires an argument about knowledge, causation, alternatives and the act supported.
- Source and method
- A shared principle; its supply-chain application remains juristic reasoning.
Excellence includes slaughter
Sahih Muslim 1955a · صحيح مسلم
- What it supports
- The report commands excellence, sharpening the blade and sparing the animal suffering during slaughter.
- Evidence boundary
- It regulates permitted slaughter; it does not abolish it or settle stunning standards by itself.
- Source and method
- Authentic in Sunni classification. Ja‘fari reasoning requires its own transmitted evidence.
Neglecting a confined cat
Sahih al-Bukhari 2365 · صحيح البخاري
- What it supports
- A woman is punished for confining a cat without feeding it or freeing it to find food.
- Evidence boundary
- Confinement combined with deprivation is explicit; not every housing system is equivalent to this case.
- Source and method
- Sunni authentic collection; establish actual deprivation before drawing the analogy.
Animals in the Qur’an
Sarra Tlili · Cambridge University Press · 2012
- What it supports
- A scholarly monograph examines animal communities, worship and interpretations of human superiority.
- Evidence boundary
- An argued academic interpretation, not consensus or a fatwa; distinguish the author’s thesis from the text.
- Source and method
- Secondary textual scholarship; consult its cited primary passages.
Food’s environmental impacts
Poore & Nemecek · Science 360, 987–992 · 2018
- What it supports
- Life-cycle evidence from about 38,700 farms documents large differences between food types and producers.
- Evidence boundary
- Global averages are not a local farm audit. Per-kilogram comparisons differ from per-protein comparisons.
- Source and method
- Peer-reviewed empirical research; inspect units and system boundaries.
Planning a vegan diet
NHS · The vegan diet
- What it supports
- A varied vegan diet requires attention to B12, calcium, iron, iodine and other nutrients.
- Evidence boundary
- General guidance is not an individual prescription, particularly for children, pregnancy or illness.
- Source and method
- Public clinical guidance; seek tailored advice for additional needs.
